Dr. Edwards first visited New Mexico in the 1970s to experience high adventure programs at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch near Cimarron. Some thirty years later he brought his family to Santa Fe after he accepted a position to work as an emergency physician –experiencing the high adventure of this exciting medical field.
Doctor Edwards grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Auburn University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. In 1986, after working for Lockheed Aircraft (now Lockheed–Martin), Dr. Edwards returned to school to begin graduate studies in aerospace engineering. At the University of Colorado in Boulder, he shifted his studies from aeronautical engineering toward space technology and eventually into space biomedical engineering. At CU–Boulder, he studied flight physiology and began working in the field of space life sciences. In 1993, he completed a doctorate in human adaptation to zero–g focusing his research efforts on changes in vestibular function that occur in astronauts as they fly in space — and then return to Earth.
During his years at the University of Colorado, Dr. Edwards played a highly active role in his research center's NASA sponsored flight programs. In this capacity, he worked on multiple sounding rocket missions (most of which flew from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico), he completed scores of flights on the NASA KC–135 zero–g aircraft, and supported numerous Space Shuttle missions. He helped design, build, and qualify to fly multiple experiments that have flown on the Space Shuttle and MIR Space Station. Highlights of these efforts included training astronaut crews and working in "Mission Control" during Space Shuttle missions.
Eventually, Dr. Edwards succumbed to a call to medicine. After graduating with an MD from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, he completed a four–year residency program in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He maintains a strong passion for flight but keep his feet on the ground working as the medical director for the emergency department at the Los Alamos Medical Center.
